Now that you’ve applied to have an NRN Solar-PV-Battery System installed with an NRN System Service Agreement, you’re ready to apply to change your electricity retailer to Diamond Energy and to apply to participate in NRN Virtual Power Plant (VPP). To keep it simple, we have one set of single rate market offers in your region and is available to all our customers in the region. Please note that these charges are not fixed and are periodically updated. You can find out the rates in your area and more details here.
If your property has a Controlled Load, this would also be applicable.
Diamond Energy’s NRN VPP add-on consists of the following charges and credits.
NRN VPP Consumption Charge: is the low rate for the electricity you use from the solar/battery system. The rate is locked in at $0.18/kWh (inclusive of GST) for the period you continue to be on the NRN VPP.
VPP Battery Overnight Feed-in Credit for the excess energy we export to the grid between the hours of 6pm overnight to 6am. This rate is equivalent to your grid usage rate.
NRN VPP Export Charge this offsets your Feed in Credits as per the agreement to transfer feed-in credits to Diamond Energy.
VPP Battery Import Credit for electricity periodically charged to the system from the grid at a rate equal to the NRN VPP Consumption Charge ($0.18/kWh)
NRN VPP Grid Usage Discount is an additional 10% discount to your grid consumption kWh charges.
NRN VPP Daily Access Charge for access to the solar and battery system. This charge is based on the Solar Capacity and Usable Battery Capacity and is adjusted based on CPI each year (effective 1st November 2024).

NRN VPP is available as an add-on to our readily available single rate or single rate with controlled load residential market offers in Vic, NSW, SA and Qld (Energex only).
NRN VPP is not available for residential properties listed with life support equipment.

Battery basics without an NRN solar battery system: If you install a solar and battery system, the electricity generated from the solar system is used in your home, with excess stored in the battery for later use. Excess electricity may be spilled into the grid to receive a small feed in credit on your bill. With the value you receive from feed in credits relatively small, the more electricity you use from the solar and battery system, the more you save. The solar and battery system may be controlled by some form of applications and you may also have options to control and/or over-ride.
VPP details: When you join a Virtual Power Plant (VPP), some level of control of the solar and battery system may move to the party that runs the VPP.

So, by joining the Diamond Energy NRN VPP, your solar and battery system is periodically helping the grid. In this way, we are able to help you access a no upfront cost quality solar and battery system.
The charges and benefits of the solar and battery system are consolidated into your electricity bill.
Yes. There may be times when we charge the battery using electricity from the grid for later use.
If we later export into the grid, you’ll receive a VPP Battery Overnight Feed-in Credit at the rate equivalent to your grid usage rate.
You are free to transfer from Diamond Energy to another retailer at any time. If you do choose to leave, the Diamond Energy NRN VPP will no longer be applied to your electricity bill and you will need to discuss other options with NRN, including the options to terminate your agreement with them.
You can contact NRN to discuss options including outright purchase of the system and/or termination of your NRN System Service Agreement.
Potential savings from day one with Diamond Energy’s NRN VPP add-on depend on how much electricity you use and when you use electricity. The more electricity you use from the solar and battery system (self-consumption) at the lower NRN VPP Consumption Charge ($0.18/kWh) helps you save more. Over time the savings can increase if grid electricity rates increase whilst the NRN VPP Consumption Charge remains fixed at $0.18/kWh for the term of the agreement. Please note that the NRN VPP Daily Access Charge ($/day) is updated annually with CPI and that Diamond Energy grid electricity rates may vary.
