How to read your meter

Find your meter

For stand-alone buildings, the meter is most likely located on the outside in one of the following locations:

  • Attached to one of the external walls
  • Front porch
  • At the rear of the building

Depending on your location and when the property was built, the meter may be located indoors in one of the following locations:

  • Hallway near front of the building
  • Other hallways
  • Laundry
  • Garage
  • Under the kitchen sink

For apartments, duplexes, or other multi-dwelling buildings, meters are most likely to be together in one place. This will either be in the basement, carpark or in a cabinet on your floor.

Make sure there’s safe access

Meters and meter boxes are designed to be very safe pieces of equipment, but they can deteriorate over time. Before reading your meter, check for:

  • Damage from water, animals or insects
  • Exposed wires and burnt or melted parts
  • If you see anything that’s potentially hazardous, do not touch it or attempt to fix it yourself. Contact us instead and we’ll advise of the appropriate next steps depending on where the damage appears.
Identify your meter type

When you’ve located your meter and confirmed safe access, refer to the below images to identify which type of meter you have and how to read it.

  • From directly in front of the meter, read each dial from left to right. Pay attention because the dials alternate in direction.
  • If the pointer is between 2 numbers, note down the lower number – except when the dial sits between 9 and 0, note down 9.
  • If the pointer is resting directly on a number, look at the dial to the right. If this number hasn’t passed 0, then the original dial hasn’t passed the number yet and you should note the lower number.

  • The meter can be read from left to right, including all leading zeros. If a dial appears to be between numbers, record the lower number – except when the dial sits between 9 and 0, note down 9.
  • If your meter has two readings marked with an L and H, read both, left to right. If you have this meter type, submit both numbers.
